If you were to pick up a Switch today, these are the games that you should definitely check out. Not all at once, as it would cost you a fortune, but stick them on your wish list. I don't think you'd be disappointed picking these up at full price, but if you get them on deal even better.
Disco Elysium
Weird and wonderful, its an interactive story, where you're playing as a detective with a severe case of amnesia. You've got a murder case to solve, and how you go about doing it is kind of up to you. Well you and a series of dice rolls. What makes the game so enjoyable, is a lot of the dice rolls you lose, just serve to re-enforce what a screw up the main character is. Listening to the main characters subconscious arguing with itself and inanimate objects, is just really engrossing and completely unique.
Return of the Obra Dinn
A ship has been discovered with all its crew missing. You're an insurance investigator(yawn), with a magical compass(yay) that allows him to experience the final moments of the crew members. For each of the missing crew, you have to discover how they died and who killed them. There are clues in each of the scenes which play out, and you have to use a process of elimination to work out all the details. It feels like a sudoku mixed with a murder mystery. Its just a really clever puzzle to solve, mix it with a really striking black and white art style, and its a must buy.
Ys VIII
Best RPG of the last 10 years, that doesn't have Final and Remake in the title. The battle system is really addictive, it's all about dodging and parrying monsters attacks at the right moment. Its really snappy and quick. The star of the show is the location. You end up shipwrecked on an island, and the way you gradually explore it just works. The tone of the story, and the natural way the game progresses lead to a really memorable experience. You'll finish this 60 hour game, and then realise there are another eight Ys games you're probably going to have to pick up.
Streets of Rage 4
Simply the best retro style beat'em up ever made. Its got a battle system that encourages you to use special moves, and chain together ridiculous combos. The soundtrack is great, and the artstyle really pops. There are a bunch of unlockable characters, and each one can be levelled up to select alternate moves. The main mode feels like a perfect follow up to what came before, with a large selection of difficulty levels. If you get bored of that, there's sizeable challenge mode, where after every fight you select an upgrade. The challenge gradually increases, as do your character's buffs. Its really addictive trying to get further and further, and every time you're defeated you get a step closer to unlocking a characters next move. Out of all the games on this list, I think I've booted this up the most.
River City Girls
The 2nd best retro style beat'em up ever made. Unlike a lot games in the genre, this is not level based. Its set in a small open world and has a lot of RPG mechanics. Beat coins out of enemies, spend coins at restaurants to boost your stats. Rinse and repeat. The story is simple, but the two main characters are super entertaining. Its fun and stylish, and the soundtrack is banana's. I challenge you not to sing the songs. I personally think streets of rage's combat is more visceral and addictive, but this is still a lot of fun. The boss battles are a highlight, they each have a Scott pilgrim style intro and have a unique gimmick.
Cotton Fantasy
Its the king of the Cute-em Ups. It plays like a classic side scrolling shooter, like R-Type or Gradius. It has 3D backgrounds and some really cool enemy design, that I think makes it really stand out. There are a bunch of selectable characters, that all play really different to one another. I'm talking completely different mechanics, and strategies. You can also select the order you play levels in. So it feels like there is a lot of content here, considering the type of game it is. There are also online leader boards which I really like in these type of games.
Windjammers 2
Take one of the most basic games ever made Pong, and just keep building layers of complexity on it. That's windjammer's in a nutshell. The game has a cool 80's aesthetic, and is as fast paced as it gets. Pick a master of extreme frisbee, and try and predict what your opponent is going to do next. You'll be using fighting game style inputs to mix up the trajectories of your shots, while waiting for the perfect opportunity to unleash your super move.
Hollow Knight
One of the best 2D adventure games ever made. The atmosphere is thick, the art style is on point and the bosses are tough as nails. Its also a game that just keeps going and going, its absolutely huge. It reminds me of Okami, in that you're expecting it to end, and it just doesn't for 20 hours after that. You play as a bug exploring the hollow nest. Its dark, mysterious, creepy but also charming and cartoony. Its like a Tim Burton film, but a bit less campy. The characters you come across will make you want to dig deeper into the dungeon, and see what creature comes next. The combat is very satisfying, when you hit an enemy, or an enemy hits you, the recoil makes everything feel powerful.
Battle Chef Brigade
Ready Steady Cook meets Candy Crush. The best multiplayer cooking game on Switch. Overcooked is great, in my opinion Battle Chef Brigade is more fun. The game has two phases, collecting your ingredients and cooking. The foraging element works like a 2D action game, so you're killing enemies to get items. The items are made up of different elements. You then take the items and mix them in the kitchen. Matching 3 elements, levels up your dish. Its not super complex, but how you deal with bones, poisonous ingredients and unwanted elements keeps you thinking. You end up so focused on your dish, that when it comes to the judging element at the end, you're really not sure who is going to win. Its a puzzle game with loads of charm, I just wish there were a few more levels and characters.
